Artist of the Month - February
OLA ATUNBI
Although originally trained in graphic design and painting from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, Olá Atunbi is a multidisciplinary artist who has found voice through drawing and storytelling. Using his distinct ability to combine unorthodox variations from screen print to collagraph, enamels, plastic paints with dry media; this gives him space to explore ideas and subject matter on alternative surfaces, making his process metaphoric of an alchemist's transformation of lead into "gold".
His art takes a view at the underlying dynamics in humanity, cultural misinformation and environmental sustenance. Applying a lens of themes based on mysticism, identity and as an open observer of the world around him, he is able to document a blend of everyday interactions that is hybrid in form as well as symbolic in narrative.
Upon his debut exhibit in 2018 at The Moore house, Ikoyi Lagos and The Impart fair, Eko Atlantic Lagos in 2019, his work has continued to gain reception with a growing audience and interest as he continues to reinvent, search and uncover new grounds within his practice. Olá lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria.
