Dipo Doherty
Nigerian born artist Dipo Doherty believes we need to unmask nature’s true identity by digging beyond the physical to reveal its secrets. He is fascinated by quantum physics and geometry and is on an abstract exploration of the human anatomy with his art.
A BS graduate of the University of Virginia, Dipo borrows from various artists, economies, multicultural narratives and new scientific concepts in his work. As his practice leads him to new forms of media, like his experiments with burnt rulers, painting is Dipo’s primal form of expression.
Group exhibitions include Young Contemporaries at Rele Gallery, Lagos (2016), Artyrama Launch, Lagos (2017) and At Work (2017) as part of his residency show with Arthouse Foundation. He was a finalist for the Art X Prize in 2016 and was commissioned for a Community Mural Project by Social Media Week, Nigeria (2018). Dipo has been featured in a number of Arthouse Contemporary’s Affordable and Modern and Contemporary Art Auctions.
His solo exhibitions include Intermission at Red Door Gallery, Lagos (2014), Coherence in Duality at Nike Art Gallery, Lagos (2015). His upcoming third solo show in July, Shards of Time at the Nigerian National Museum, offers a journey through Dipo’s mind, thoughts and issues that matter to him most. Through paper work, painting and mixed media, he materializes the idea of time as a shard – a unique piece of a shattered element, different from the rest, yet belonging to a whole.
At present, Dipo is preparing for his post graduate studies in Design Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He will continue creating, employing eyes as a common theme in his work (representing awareness, existence and intelligence) Dipo hopes that these abstract experiences of his provoke the same feeling of self-discovery in the eyes of the viewer as well.
