Arthouse-The Space presents Line.By.Line, a solo exhibition of Nsukka-based art Eva Obodo. This exhibition includes Obodo’s recent experimentations with unconventional materials and processes. Focusing on fibre and charcoal as conceptual mediums, Obodo creates reliefs and free standing works using diverse techniques including wrapping, typing, and bundling. Constructing abstract forms from a collection of discarded objects, Odobo calls into question opposing cultural forces. While nylon fibre and wrapped jute sacks reference material culture in a global context, his charcoal works allude to the fragility of natural elements. Obodo engages the temporality of his appropriated materials, deconstructing the past and present in order to shed light on the uncertainty of the future.
Eva Obodo is a visual artist who works in painting, sculpture, and mixed media practices. Obodo has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, including the Osaka Trinnale, Japan (2001) and the Dakar Biennale, Senegal (2002). Obodo participated in the first African Regional Summit and Exhibition of Visual Arts (ARESUVA) in Abuja, Nigeria (2008), and was appointed as a juror for the Life in My City Art Festival in Enugu, Nigeria in 2012. Obodo received the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Award in 2013. Obodo holds a B.A. (1992), M.F.A (1999), and Ph.D (2011) from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He currently teaches sculpture and art education in the same university. His writing has been published in over 20 publications including scholarly journals and exhibition catalogues.
